See first three winners of small business local buzz competition

The first three winners of Intuit’s fantastic Small Business Local Buzz competition have already been announced, with more on the way later this week.

So far Glasgow-based middle eastern food business Habibi Kitchen set up and run by Mel Grossman has been awarded £1,000 along with Brighton-based crochet kit designer Sofie Kay, who runs the aptly-named Sewfie.

Last week Shop Scotland, an online portal which champions independent creative businesses based in Scotland, became the latest firm to pick up the £1,000 prize.  Run by Edinburgh-based mum Susan Elliot, Shop Scotland provides a way for shoppers to find new and search independent stores and makers.  Susan recently introduced Shop Scotland gift vouchers – and they are already accepted by nearly 60 independent businesses.

Susan said: “I am really flattered to be this week’s winner. So many amazing businesses have entered so I didn’t really know what my chances would be. When I got the phone call to say I’d won I was totally over the moon.

“I love running Shop Scotland and it’s great to be recognised and know other people outside of the business also appreciate what we are trying to do. I’m really happy!”

Intuit UK, together with StartUp Britain, opened its national competition offering £20,000 of funding to British start-ups and business owners last month. Within an hour 222 businesses had uploaded their details to the site to be in with a chance to secure the most votes.

Winners are selected through a combination of online votes and a judging panel with representatives from Intuit and StartUp Britain.

As part of Intuit’s pledge to the Government-backed Business Exchange, Intuit is offering ten £1,000 cash awards and one £10,000 grand during the six-week campaign. Submissions open on 26th February and the overall £10,000 winner is to be announced on 4th April 2014.
